What is Scar Revision?
Scars are a very common skin flaw and can be located anywhere on the body and face. In some cases, a scar is a reminder of a wound that once existed or another issue that caused a disruption to the skin. While most scars are not a problem, some scars are unsightly and unappealing. They can be too wide or too big, bumpy, dark, raised, or recessed. Based on where the scar is located and its state, scar revision may be needed to improve how it looks. Cosmetic Surgery Specialists offers scar revision in a variety of approaches that works to reduce the size and appearance of your scar.
What are the Types of Scars?
There are many types of scars. The type you have can determine the available techniques to correct it. The most frequent scars Dr. Brackup sees are:
- Superficial Scars
These are the subtlest type of scars. They don't cause any issue other than an unsightly appearance. - Hypertrophic Scars
A hypertrophic scar may also be big. They may be thicker and grow bigger in time, but hypertrophic scars don't usually expand beyond the wound site. - Keloid Scars
Although rare, these scars are more noticeable in size and can be sometimes painful. The skin surrounding the scar is typically discolored and the scar tissue grows past the edges of the original wound.

How is Scar Revision Performed?
Scar improvement is performed in our office at Cosmetic Surgery Specialists and in more extensive cases may involve the surgical center. We offer a variety of treatment methods for scar revision, including steroid and 5-FU injections, IPL, and the Icon 1540 laser. For some patients, it isn't the shape or size of the scar that is the concern but the color or texture. There are many state-of-the-art, noninvasive laser treatments that can lessen the color and visibility of a scar, eliminating the need for surgery. Also, if you have a recessed scar or it appears "pitted," Dr. Brackup may discuss a dermal filler product to create a more natural, even surface.
