Overview
Laser wrinkle reduction (also called laser skin resurfacing) is an effective and long-lasting method to reduce or eliminate the wrinkles that cause a prematurely-aged appearance, including "crow’s feet" and "lipstick lines." The Registered Nurses working under the direction of Dr. Alan Brackup perform fractional laser skin resurfacing with the advanced Cynosure Palomar Icon system The controlled injury created by the laser prompts the growth of new, younger-looking skin. The resurfacing also causes a realignment of the collagen structure of the skin, which increases skin elasticity to create a more supple look and feel.

Procedure Technique
Fractional laser skin resurfacing uses controlled light beams with high intensity to vaporize and remove the upper layer of the skin. When the damaged, superficial skin is removed, it gives way for new skin to grow, which resurfaces the face with a new layer of epidermis. Any pain during the procedure is managed with local anesthesia and/or sedatives to help the patient relax. Fractional laser skin resurfacing’s advanced technology allows accurate targeting of smaller areas so the surrounding skin is not affected. A session may take up to 2 hours depending on the patient’s skin conditions.
FRACTIONAL VS. FULLY ABLATIVE
There are primarily two types of laser skin resurfacing. The first is fully ablative technology performed by Dr. Brackup and discussed in detail under “face procedures”. Briefly, the entire surface of the skin is removed resulting in the most dramatic improvement possible. Fractional resurfacing is just that; it is the removal of a fraction of the skin’s surface. While fully ablative technology is the best for the deepest lines and wrinkles, fractional resurfacing is a gentler modality better suited for more moderate skin aging. Since a fraction of the skin remains unaffected, downtime is less and healing is faster. This procedure is performed by our rigorously trained and highly experienced Registered Nurse.
What to Expect
Laser skin resurfacing is an out-patient procedure. Some patients will desire oral pain medication pre-treatment, and these are prescribed at the time of scheduling. Topical numbing cream is applied in the office. The length of the procedure depends upon the areas treated. Afterwards, there is minimal discomfort. The skin may appear red for several weeks. As it heals, crusting may be present. It is very important to follow the doctor’s advice on skin care to prevent any scarring. It will take a few days to a week before the patient can resume normal activities. Specialized skin care products will be given to minimize healing time and maximize results.
