Full, round cheeks and lips are signs of youth, so it makes sense that with age, your cheeks and lips lose volume and contour. While stores are now full of contouring make-up that can make your cheeks look full, they can be tricky to apply and may end up making you look dirty if done wrong. The Juvéderm family of injectables includes Voluma XC and Ultra XC which are specifically made to restore volume to the cheeks and lips. The hyaluronic-acid based gel in Voluma and Ultra XC can be safely injected into the apples of the cheeks and the lips for temporary lift and fullness that also eliminates many of the fine lines and wrinkles in nearby areas. Double board-certified cosmetic surgeon and ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Brackup offers both Juvéderm Voluma XC and Ultra XC injections for the cheeks and lips at Cosmetic Surgery Specialists in Langhorne, Bucks County, PA. Dr. Brackup uses a wide range of injectable treatments, including BOTOX®, Juvéderm XC, and more to help each patient achieve their best results.

What to Expect

Voluma or Juvéderm Ultra XC is injected into the skin with fine needles, so some patients may experience some minor pain from the initial prick. Numbing creams may be applied on the injection site to ease the patient’s discomfort. Patients also have the option to use lidocaine, which is mixed with the solution, to help provide anesthetic effects in and around the area. A treatment may last up to 30 minutes. Patients will be able to return to daily activities after several hours. There may be some swelling, discoloration and tenderness around the treated area, but will subside after a few days. Results are readily evident, and can last up to 2 years.

Voluma and Ultra XC FAQs

Is Hyaluronic Acid Natural?

Hyaluronic acid, the main ingredient in Voluma and Juvéderm Ultra XC, is derived from natural substances found in the human body. Its main function is cell hydration, and with its cross-linking abilities, it is generally useful in helping facial areas that lack volume. Over time, the gel substance breaks down and is absorbed naturally by the body without any side effects.

Ideal Candidate?

Those who seek improved volume in the cheeks and lips may consider Voluma or Juvéderm Ultra XC as a noninvasive solution. The lack of cheek and lip volume may be due to aging or the patient’s natural facial structure. The doctor will be able to recommend if Voluma or Juvéderm Ultra XC is the best option during the initial consultation.

How Long Is Recovery?

Right after treatment, patients will be able to resume to their normal routine with restriction on strenuous activities or any movement that may put pressure on the treated area. It may take up to 1 week before the dermal filler settles within the cheek pockets or lips.

Long Term?

Among dermal fillers available in the market today, Voluma and Ultra XC can last up to 2 years or longer. Re-injection varies as patients’ bodies process and break down hyaluronic acid at different rates.
