More than 50 million men and women in America are affected by hair loss. By the age of 35, 40% of men will have noticeable hair loss, while 65% of women will experience hair loss before the age of 60. Thinning hair and bald spots can significantly decrease your confidence and make you look older, but modern hair transplant surgery offers a great solution. At Cosmetic Surgery Specialists in Langhorne, Bucks County, PA, Dr. Alan Brackup performs both FUE and FUT hair transplant techniques. As a double-board certified cosmetic surgeon and ophthalmologist, Dr. Brackup specializes in performing natural-looking hair transplant surgery that uses your own hair to fill in thin and bald spots so you can enjoy a fuller head of hair.

Procedure Technique

Hair transplantation is a process in which hair is taken from the back of the head and replaced in areas where hair loss has occurred. FUE uses a special technology that is able to quickly and painlessly remove the hair follicles from the back of the head and implant them to balding areas. FUE uses a controlled pneumatic pressure to slide out the graft smoothly, so there is no pulling or twisting, which can risk damaging the graft. Because the FUE transplant is faster than other out of date methods, the grafts can be re-implanted sooner which keeps them more robust, increasing the success of the grafting process. However, some patients may be better candidates for the FUT or strip hair transplant method. FUT removes and transplants several hair follicles at once for a shorter procedure.

What To expect

During FUE surgery, the machine grafts a few hair follicles. These will then be transplanted into the area of balding. A session can last up to 3 hours. After the procedure, the patient’s head will be thoroughly rinsed and a protective cream will be applied to the scalp. Rigid instructions about taking care of the grafts will be provided. It is normal to experience a slight pain and tenderness for the first few days following the procedure. The patient must refrain from physical activities to avoid additional swelling of the forehead. Make sure that no pressure is put on or around the treated area to avoid complications.

Hair Transplant Surgery FAQs

How Effective?

The science behind hair grafting has been simplified over the years. Hair follicles are taken from the hair at the back of the head that is genetically programmed to continue to grow. The follicles that hold the transplanted hair are living tissues that grow cyclically. Like normal hair growth, transplantation is an ongoing process that requires a commitment of time. Once the hair follicle has been implanted into the balding area, the grafted hair will stay in place for about 2 – 3 weeks before shedding. After shedding, the new growth will begin in 3 – 4 months; this is normal and an important part of the new hair growth process. After that time period, the hair will continue to grow normally and the results will look healthy and natural.

Better Method?

Another popular method for hair growth is called the strip method. There is no significant difference when it comes to the results by using FUE or FUT (strip). Both methods implement different levels of invasiveness and the noticeable size of the area from where hair is grafted. In terms of the quality of results, hair growth will be evident from either FUE or FUT approach. We will discuss all possible options during the initial assessment.

Best Candidates?

During the initial consultation, the scalp will be assessed to make sure the patient is a candidate for hair transplant surgery. Candidates for hair restoration surgery are those individuals with hair loss that have sufficient donor hair on the back of the scalp to transplant into the frontal balding areas. The best candidates are those men and women with only frontal or partial hair loss and with adequate donor hair.
