Overview

Microneedling can benefit patients of all skin types with some skin laxity to give their skin a boost by tightening of the tissue. The SkinPen is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device that can treat acne scars, hyperpigmentation, fine wrinkles, stretch marks and surgical scars. At Cosmetic Surgery Specialists in Langhorne, Bucks County, PA, double board-certified oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Alan Brackup offers microneedling for skin rejuvenation. The Skinpen creates thousands of microchannels that stimulate your own healing response and boost production of new collagen. This can rejuvenate from the inside out.

Procedure technique

Most microneedling procedures take about 30 minutes. Skinpen offers little to no downtime and can be used on all skin types (Fitzpatrick 1-6). A light numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area 30-45 minutes prior to the procedure. Afterwards you will leave with a mild red color to your skin that will fade within 24-48 hours. The Registered Nurse performing the procedure can discuss optional serums or the application of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) to be applied right after the procedure.

What to Expect

Patients may have mild redness in the treated area for up to 3 days, but this can usually be covered with mineral makeup. Some patients may notice other mild reactions, including burning, tightness, and skin flaking. Patients will be able to resume their normal activities immediately after their treatment, but heavy activity and exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours. Since it takes time for the effects of increased collagen and elastin to become visible, patients may see some improvement immediately, but most will see their results 3 – 6 months after their treatment.

Microneedling FAQs

How Many Treatments?

We will discuss your treatment goals and these will determine the number of treatments you will need. Most patients will get their best results after 3 microneedling treatments, but once the desired results are achieved, patients should continue to schedule touch up treatments to maintain the results. Patients generally see sustained results if they get 1 – 2 microneedling sessions every year.

What Are Collagen and Elastin?

Collagen and elastin are proteins found in the tissue to support the skin. The supply of collagen fibers and elastin in the body typically decreases with age and the decreased elasticity of the skin leads to sagging, wrinkles, and lines.

Best Candidates?

The best candidates for microneedling are usually age 50 and under who are beginning to see the start of aging and environmental damage, but they still have good skin elasticity. Microneedling can be used on all skin types and tones, but it is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
