Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy in Bucks County

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are dilated and tortuous blood vessels which commonly occur just beneath the skin of the upper and lower legs.  Not only are they cosmetically unsightly, but they can also cause pain, burning, or cramping sensations.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are similar to varicose veins but are smaller in diameter.  They typically appear red or blue in color, and they may resemble the legs of a spider or even have a more matted appearance.

What causes varicose and spider veins?

Varicose and spider veins are very common in both men and women.  Many factors may contribute to their formation including aging, heredity, and hormonal influences.  In fact, multiple pregnancies can increase your risk for varicosities.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy involves injecting the abnormal veins with a medicine, or sclerosant.  This chemical causes an injury to the inside of the veins which ultimately eliminates them.  Your body resorbs the injured veins and replaces them with normal tissues.

Following your treatment, small bandages are taped onto each injected vein to provide a little extra compression for the first two days.  You also wear light compression stockings immediately after the procedure for the first two days continuously, then during the daytime only for a week.

How long until I see results?

Bruising is common and may last for 2-4 weeks.  You may not see the ultimate result for another month after that.

Are multiple treatments required?

The number of treatments depends largely on the extent of varicose and spider veins present.  While the average number of treatments is approximately three to four, sometimes as many as six treatments may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
