Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

Women with very large or pendulous breasts often experience both physical and emotional symptoms.  Aside from negative body image, patients may have back, shoulder, or neck pain, or may have irritation of the skin underneath the breast.  A breast reduction procedure involves the surgical removal of skin, glandular, and fatty tissue of the breast, while simultaneously relocating the nipple to a higher, more natural position.  Moreover, an over-stretched areola (the pigmented area around the nipple) can be reduced in size as well.

Patients wear a fitted post-surgical bra or sports bra (no underwire) during the recovery period until the incisions have healed.  Routine mammograms before and after the procedure may be necessary to establish a baseline against which to track any future changes.  Breast reduction can improve a patient's self-esteem, physical symptoms, and overall quality of life, and it ranks among the procedures with the highest patient satisfaction.
