Breast Augmentation |

Breast AugmentationAs a woman, you might choose Dr. Hubert to perform your breast augmentation in Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, for any of several reasons. These include improvement in breast projection or fullness, establishing a better proportion to your overall figure, and enhanced body image and confidence. It can be quite common for some women to experience a loss in breast volume following pregnancy or significant weight loss. Or you may have had previous breast augmentation with saline-filled implants and choose to exchange your current implants for silicone gel-filled implants. You may have had a previous procedure at a time when previous FDA restrictions (see below) prevented the option for silicone gel-filled implants, and these now are an option. Furthermore, you may have undergone mastectomy or may have been born with an asymmetry between the breasts, and you might choose breast augmentation as a balancing procedure. Procedures Combined with Breast AugmentationOccasionally Dr. Hubert performs breast augmentation in combination with a breast lifting procedure (mastopexy) for correction of sagging or drooping tissues. With several options for incision placement and a variety of implant sizes and shapes available, Dr. Hubert personalizes each decision to you, the individual patient, based on your body dimensions and goals. Your breast augmentation procedure is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia at St. Mary Medical Center, located on 53 picturesque acres of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. You can expect to wear a fitted post-surgical bra during the recovery period. Most women experience some post-operative discomfort for 1-2 weeks, and are soon back to normal activities typically around four weeks. Silicone ImplantsIn the early 1990's, questions were raised regarding the safety of silicone gel-filled breast implants. This led the FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration, the body that oversees medical devices such as breast implants) to limit the use of gel-filled implants while further studies were conducted. Extensive testing of these implants since that time has been conducted and even continues to this day. Of course, during this entire time, the FDA continued to allow the same silicone implants to be used in patients who were having breast reconstruction (e.g. after mastectomy for breast cancer), as well as saline-filled implants for cosmetic reasons. The implants used for reconstructive purposes were part of these studies, and literally hundreds of thousands were used. The FDA, after reviewing all of the scientific evidence, decided in November of 2006, to release silicone gel-filled implants for open cosmetic use in patients 22 years old and above. Suffice it to say that, in most instances today, the use of either silicone gel-filled or saline-filled implants is possible, and we are happy to discuss the advantages and disadvantages at your consultation.
