Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation in Langhorne and Trenton covering Pennsylvania and New Jersey

As a woman, you might choose a breast augmentation procedure for any of several reasons.  These include improvement in breast projection or fullness, establishing a better proportion to your overall figure, and enhanced body image and confidence.  It can be quite common for some women to experience a loss in breast volume following pregnancy or significant weight loss.  Other women who have had previous breast augmentation with saline-filled implants might choose to exchange their current implants for silicone gel-filled implants.  You may have had a previous procedure at a time when  previous FDA restrictions (see below) prevented the option for silicone gel-filled implants, and these now are an option.  Furthermore, women who have undergone mastectomy or who were born with an asymmetry between the breasts might also choose breast augmentation as a balancing procedure.

Occasionally we perform breast augmentation at our Langhorne location in combination with a breast lifting procedure (mastopexy) for correction of sagging or drooping tissues.  With several options for incision placement and a variety of implant sizes and shapes available, we personalize each decision to the individual patient based on your body dimensions and goals.  This procedure is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, and the patient can expect to wear a fitted post-surgical bra during the recovery period.  Most women experience post-operative discomfort for 1-2 weeks, and normal activities typically can be resumed around four weeks.

Silicone Implants

In the early 1990's, questions were raised regarding the safety of silicone gel-filled breast implants.  This led the FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration, the body that oversees medical devices such as breast implants) to limit the use of gel-filled implants while further studies were conducted.  Extensive testing of these implants since that time has been conducted and even continues to this day.  Of course, during this entire time, the FDA continued to allow the same silicone implants to be used in patients who were having breast reconstruction (e.g. after mastectomy for breast cancer), as well as saline-filled implants for cosmetic reasons.  The implants used for reconstructive purposes were part of these studies, and literally hundreds of thousands were used.  The FDA, after reviewing all of the scientific evidence, decided in November of 2006, to release silicone gel-filled implants for open cosmetic use in patients 22 years old and above.  Suffice it to say that, in most instances today, the use of either silicone gel-filled or saline-filled implants is possible, and we are happy to discuss the advantages and disadvantages at your consultation.
